Power Sleep : The Revolutionary Program That Prepares Your Mind for Peak Performance
By James B. Maas, David J. Axelrod
see relatedPower Sleep Reviewed
In Dr. Maas's own words, "If you're getting less than eight hours of sleep each night, including weekends, or if you fall asleep instantly, or need an alarm clock to wake up, consider yourself one of millions of chronically sleep-deprived people - perhaps blissfully ignorant of how sleepy and ineffective you are, or how dynamic you could be with adequate sleep."
The main points of the book are straightforward. Keep a regular sleep schedule everyday, even on weekends. That is, go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday, 365 days a year...and make sure you're getting enough sleep in the process. He gives you a method and a sleep log that you can keep to make sure that you are getting enough sleep. While the book isn't as scientific as someone such as myself would like, it's toned down message makes it great for a wide readership and that is exactly his intention. For example, there is an entire chapter dedicated to assisting the shift worker get proper restorative sleep.
The is a book for beginners, and because the vast majority of people don't really know jack about sleep (even many who THINK they know something), so this book would be useful to just about anyone who picks it up. I am personally going to start implementing the everyday sleep schedule, as well as a few other recommendations from the book (no alcohol w/in 2 hours of sleeping and no caffeine within 6 hours). I think that in itself is the best praise I can give the book.
